Rangitoto College’s vision for an e-learning environment involves quality sound, so Halogen Audio is commisioned to rewire each classroom and equip them with a speaker and sound mixer, allowing teachers to connect their sound sources to enhance teaching. Halogen Audio also provides Rangitoto College’s teachers with ongoing support and training to use the sound systems effectively.
RANGITOTO COLLEGE has some of the best facilities in the Southern Hemisphere including modern classrooms that supports an excellent academic environment. Rangitoto College’s vision for e-learning, where ICT is integrated to support learning, was conceived in 2009. Shortly after, a state of the art wireless network was developed and by the start of school in Jan 2012 the 134 classrooms were fitted with data projectors and interactive whiteboards.
An e-learning environment is not only about visual stimulation and interactive software but also about sound. In September 2012, Halogen Audio commenced an ongoing sound implementation in the classrooms in a priority stage process. Each classroom will be rewired and equipped with a speaker and sound mixer. This allows teachers to connect their sound sources, such as a laptop, iPod, microphones, guitars etc. and the sound source is then mixed through a wall mounted mini mixer, producing sound over a quality speaker for excellent clarity to enhance teaching. Up to five sound sources in total can be connected. Between September 2012 and January 2014, 27 standard classrooms and 3 technology classrooms have been fitted with the upgraded sound.
Halogen Audio provides Rangitoto College with ongoing professional service and support including training to use the sound systems effectively. The teachers at Rangitoto College receive ongoing professional development in using technology to teach more effectively and, by now, have developed a wide range of curriculum material and supporting sources that can be accessed online. The online learning and assessment materials include tasks, exemplars, guidebooks and videos. This e-learning environment is revolutionising the way students create, present and reflect work. Rangitoto College have seen an increase in student engagement and productivity, which have led to better learning outcomes.
Derek Wenmoth, a director of eLearning for CORE Education, says “Rangitoto College is at the vanguard of public schools implementing infrastructure, along with policies, that enable students to have seamless use of ICT in their everyday school environment”.
Upgrading the sound in the classrooms is an ongoing project subject to a variety of factors such as priority, budget and other ongoing projects at Rangitoto College.
