THEATRE
Uxbridge Arts and Culture was founded in 1981 and is located in the old Uxbridge Presbyterian Church and associated buildings. Uxbridge Arts and Culture focuses on “enhancing the local community through arts, culture and lifestyle activities” (http://www.uxbridge.co.nz/home/more/about/).
The Centre has since then gone through several restructurings and last year began work on renovating the church building and adding a new Visitor Centre next door which houses a café, meeting room and the Malcolm Smith Gallery, as well as several other smaller buildings on the site.
In mid-2015, Halogen Audio was approached to tender for the full refurbishment and upgrading of the AV system in the theatre (the old church building). The scope of the project consisted of a complete new design for the space including all audio, lighting and video requirements.
Halogen Audio designed custom lighting bars to be used within the space. The church building is in a cruciform shape, which presented a mild challenge in terms of lighting, as the transept areas would be left in shadow if traditional straight lighting bars were used. Therefore, Halogen Audio proposed to make custom curved lighting bars that will be installed in the two transepts to counteract this problem. As well as these, five more custom made straight lighting bars were designed to be installed at various intervals parallel to the stage. All lighting bars were prewired for power, as well as DMX signal.
The Uxbridge theatre is occasionally used for conferences or as a cinema, therefore a projector as well as projector screen was required. The brief required that when not in use, the projector screen casing should be as unobtrusive as possible. Halogen Audio therefore commissioned a custom order screen with a 1.6m leader and black casing, so that it could be installed as high up in the roof space as possible and out of sight unless used.
For the audio, Halogen Audio installed a B3 mini line array system for main front of house, as well as one center JBL Control 29AV to fill a centre deadspot, and two more JBL Control 29AV’s as rear fills.
Halogen Audio also installed some small ceiling speakers in the Concourse of the Centre where the new main entrance to the complex is located.
In addition to the above brief, Halogen Audio was requested to supply a solution for soft house lighting in the theatre, as the only other house lighting is harsh fluorescent lights. Halogen Audio installed 12 Philips Hue Bloom lights, that can be controlled via an iPad app.
The audio within the theatre is capable of being controlled with an iPad app, which means that a technician can be on stage whilst making adjustments without the need to go into the control booth.
